Trying to find burgundy that is affordable and yet representative of the region has become increasingly difficult so the sub-regions increasingly become a source . Maurice Charleux is the appellation's best address. Now run by Maurice's son Vincent, they seem to achieve great ripeness and purity in his fruit but with the essential acidic structure for balance and ageing.
The 'La Fussiere' is one of the big surprises of Charleux's stable of wines, there not being a whole lot of white Maranges available. 100% Chardonnay, the wine is fermented in tank before aging in oak, 20% of which is new. With aromas of apple and pear and a touch of more exotic fruits, there is wonderful weight balanced by a seam of freshness . Wonderful value!!
