Angus Paul Wines is a young, dynamic South African winery founded by winemaker Angus Paul, with its first vintage released in 2020. The cellar is based at Karibib Wine Craft in Stellenbosch, working with vineyards across the Western Cape. Angus focuses on South Africa’s heritage grape varieties, particularly Chenin Blanc, Pinotage and Cinsault. Winemaking is minimal-intervention, relying on spontaneous fermentation, whole-bunch techniques, neutral oak, and minimal sulphur to let the vineyards express themselves.
One site: the Polkadraai Hills; one grape: Chenin Blanc. This bottling currently uses one vineyard, on Karibib farm on False Bay. The bony granite soils inexplicably, but undeniably, in concert with the harsh winds of the South Easter, provide a racy expression of Chenin Blanc grown in a warm climate. This vintage is open in body and tight in structure: kelp, citrus, white stone fruit and golden delicious apples.
