'From the geological fault of Ribeauvillé and cultivated on limestone and sandstone, the 2017 Grand Cru Geisberg Riesling is from an old, south-facing steep and terraced 2.66-hectare cru of the Vignoble du Couvent du Ribeauvillé that Trimbach has cultivated for more than a decade now, with the first vintage produced in 2009 (released in 2015). The 2017 is pure and discreet yet substantial on the deep, mineral nose. Full-bodied, intense and saline on the palate, this is a rich yet precise, intense and elegant Geisberg from one of the smallest grand cru sites in Alsace. The low-yielding 2017 turns out as a classic here, with dense, clear, elegant fruit and an intense and sustainable mineral structure that keeps the tension and aging potential high. This concentrated Geisberg Riesling is lush but also crystalline and persistently saline, with fine tannins and a dense, finely bitter finish. This is an impressive, powerful, driving-forward Riesling that slowly starts to open up and will still develop and can be aged for up to two decades and even longer. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2023.' Stephen Reinhardt Wine Advocate.
