Rodrigo Mendez makes not just great Albarino but also much rarer Galician reds. Forjas des Salnes began as a garage winery in 2005 and was named after the ironworks set up by Rodrigo’s grandfather. To understand the true potential of the grapes Albarino, Caina, Espadeiro and Loureira Tinto and the region Rias Baixas it is simply essential to taste these wines.
"The 2021 Leirana O Pradiño is the second vintage of a different Albariño from a vineyard planted in 2012 in Sanxenxo on decomposed gneiss soils with a very fine sandy texture. It has 12.5% alcohol and more integrated acidity than the initial vintage. It's more civilized and polished, with notes of pollen and bay leaf, a hint of straw (which I found in many 2021 whites here), developing a note of gunpowder with time in the glass, and it has a long, tasty finish. It fermented and matured in a 600-liter barrel. 750 bottles were filled in August 2022"
