Juan Antonio Ponce stands alone as the leader of Manchuela and as the master of the Bobal grape. Manchuela, a lesser-known Spanish wine region that is inland from Valencia, specializes in the Bobal variety with its thick skins and rusticity. Bodegas Ponce is a pioneer when there are very few defenders of this region and even fewer winemakers that are dedicated to this varietal and other native grapes Moravia Agria and Albilla. The winery was founded in 2005, is worked biodynamically and during the winemaking process a natural approach is taken with minimum levels of sulphur dioxide used.
'La Casilla' is 100% Bobal, with concentrated and juicy red fruits flavours and a hint spice and licorice on the palate. With fine but supple tannins, it lasts long on the palate with a lingering smoky minerality. Wine Advocate
