Join us from 6:30pm on Wednesday the 13th of may, for a tasting of the breadth and depth of Australian wine. Hosted by Ben Reynolds
Wine making has existed since the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. An attempt at wine making from these first vines failed, but with perseverance, other settlers managed to successfully cultivate vines for winemaking, and Australian made wine was available for sale domestically by the 1820s. Early Australian winemakers faced many difficulties, particularly due to the unfamiliar Australian climate. But because it is also warm, dry, and Mediterranean overall, making Australia ideal for wine production, they eventually achieved considerable success.
Winemaking has expanded throughout the south and west of the country, incorporating a wide variety of terroir and climate. Australia has no native and as such all varietals have been imported to the country. Major varietals include Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Riesling and most importantly Syrah. And on the back of these grapes success more and more varietals are been planted making impressive wines.
This is a fantastic opportunity to explore the wide range of wines and the geographical diversity that Australia has to offer.
