Tuscany; Located in Central Italy, with the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west and the Appennine Mountains to the east, this hilly terrain is blessed with a Mediterranean climate, where the extremes of summer heat are tempered by the elevation of the hills. The poor soils of Tuscany result in lower yields and high quality wines, leading to the regions reputation of producing amazing quality wines, proudly gracing the tables of renowned restaurants an wine aficionados around the world.
With the Sangiovese grape being the most important in this region where red wine makes up 80% of the production, it is around this grape that the greatest of the Tuscan vineyards have concentrated their wine-making prowess. Amongst the foremost of these Producers are Biondi-Santi and Isole e Olena. The later came into existence in the 1950's, in the Chianti region, when the de Marchi family, purchased the neighbouring estates of 'Isole' and 'Olena', founding one vineyard and beginning a decades long restless quest for quality and excellence in wine.
To the south, in the region of Brunello, their history is even older. Founders of the Brunello di Montalcino region, Biondi-Santi produced the first of these iconic wines in 1888. Since then, this fabled estate has ensured the excellency of its wines, known for their extreme longevity, through seven generations.
Both these incredible estates are now owned by Christopher Descours, who also owns Charles Heidsieck, Piper-Heidsieck, Rare Champagne and Château La Verrerie. While new owner are in place at these historic estates, there is a vision to the future and new peaks of excellence, but in keeping with the heritage and style that each vineyards has cultivated over many, many years.
This is a wonderful opportunity to taste and explore two classic, but stylistically different Tuscan wines from two iconic Vineyards, all presented by Simone Mannelli, a fountain of knowledge for these amazing wines.
