Founded in 2006 by Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero, 4 Kilos is a winery that is dedicated, and has possibly rescued, the local grape Callet. Once a sheep farm, this winery is now recognised as one, if not the best producers on the island. The name 4 Kilos, refers to the initial 4 million peastas investment that was used to launch the winery. Money well spent we believe!!
12 Volts is made mostly of local grapes Callet and Fogoneu, but with a percentage of international varieties. This is a rich and intense wine, but it has lots of fresh and vibrant read and black fruits to balance it beautifully.
'The 2021 12 Volts, from a cooler year without major issue in the vineyard, has a similar blend as the other years, approximately 60% Callet, 30% Syrah and the remaining 10% Mantonegro and Fogoneu. It's clean, clear, bright, fresh and floral, with moderate alcohol, 12%, fine tannins and great purity and a chalky sensation in the finish. 50,000 bottles produced.
I visited 4 Kilos in Mallorca, which I had not done since early 2019. They keep working in the biodiversity of their vineyards, doing studies of the fauna and planting flowers to increase the life and the pollinating agents.
2021 was a cooler year in the style of 2018, and 2022 was warm and dry, more in line with 2019. As for 2023, it was also a cooler year with higher yields and still very young. From what I tasted from barrel, the wines are fresh and perfumed, very promising and elegant.' Luis Gutierrez- Wine Advocate
