In 2004 Ivan Sutherland and James Sealy decided to take the skills they’d learnt as viticulturalist and winemaker at Cloudy Bay and set up on their own; having a significant head start as Ivan had planted vineyards in Marlborough back in the 1970s. Dog Point remains very much owned by the two families – aiming firmly for high-quality wines, produced as naturally as possible. They use hand-picked, low-yield grapes, with the wine meticulously made and hugely expressive of both Sauvignon Blanc and the terroir of the Wairau Valley.
Pale straw. Pure and bright aroma perfume with aromatics of grapefruit and white peach. Subtle smoke and gravelly tones layered over this create a complexity beyond the immediate fruit profile. Palate Juicy, plush, white fleshed fruit pour across the palate with a refreshing and defined acidity balancing the sunny fruit profile, finishing clean and dry.
