"The organic G.D. Vajra 2022 Langhe Freisa Kyè exhibits a dark color and sun-drenched flavors of black fruit, spice and a hint of balsam herb or eucalyptus essence. Freisa is genetically linked to Nebbiolo, although this variety offers more black and purple fruits over a robust and loosely knit texture. This edition of Kyè has a hint of sweetness over a medium-plus finish."
- 92/100pts, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
Indigenous to Piemonte, Freisa was discovered to be Nebbiolo’s closest relative in 2004. The two varieties share many similarities, most notably their ability to create structures and perfumed wines with a sense of place. Grapes for this wine are sourced from the San Ponzio vineyard in the commune of Barolo. They are grown at an elevation of 390-410 metres above sea level, on a clay-rich soil. The vines are the result of a massale selection from an old vineyard and it was planted by Aldo Vaira in 1980. Two more blocks include Bergera and Novello.
