Join us from 6:30pm on Thursday the 16th of October, for an exclusive tasting of the phenomenal wines of Domaine Ponsot. Hosted by Charles Derain
The Domaine was founded by William Ponsot, originally of Saint-Romain, who acquired the Clos des Mont Luisants and settled in Morey-Saint-Denis in 1872. In 1920, his cousin and godson, Hippolyte Ponsot took direction of the domaine, inaugurating estate bottling with the 1934 vintage, someting that very few wineries did at the time, which was exported to the US and other international markets from the very beginning. Hippolyte also played an important role in the foundation of the appellation system in the mid-1930s. Hippolyte’s son, Jean-Marie Ponsot, directed the domaine from 1958 to 1982. He was responsible for a slew of great wines and also provided the parent material for the INAO’s first selection of clonal Pinot Noir—meaning that the old vines in Ponsot’s Clos de la Roche are the genetic source of much of the world’s Pinot Noir plantings today!!!! Jean-Marie’s son Laurent Ponsot took charge of winemaking at the domaine, beginning with the 1983 vintage, until his departure in 2017. Today, Laurent’s sister Rose-Marie directs the estate—indeed, she has served as codirector since 1997, despite keeping a rather lower profile than her more flamboyant brother. Rose-Marie is seconded by Alexandre Abel.
Domaine Ponsot are responsible for many of the ideas and practices that permeate Burgundian wine-making and indeed the world of wine-making at large.
This very special tasting is a must for true lovers of Burgundian wine and a fantastic opportunity to taste and sample these amazing wines.
