Roland Velich is generally regarded as one of the leading producers of this local varietal, Blaufrankisch. He made his first vintage in 2001 , farms biodynamically and he works in a low intervention methodology with indigenous yeasts and ages the wines, some made from 85year old vines, in large used oak barrels. Jancis Robinson recently wrote that his wines are increasingly complex and expressive examples of the varietal. Burgenland is a warm region but the grape is capable of withstanding drought conditions and producing fresh and balanced wines despite recent warm-hot seasons.
