The prestige of Greppo begins at the beginning of the 19th century with the great wine culture of the owner family of this company, whose territory has an extraordinary viticultural vocation for Sangiovese. Clemente began to vinify Sangiovese in purity and passed on his wine making science to his nephew Ferruccio Biondi Santi who, following the arrival of phylloxera in the mid-19th century, selected a Sangiovese clone with which he was able to give life to wines of extraordinary longevity. It was Ferruccio himself who produced the first bottle of Brunello di Montalcino in 1888.
Currently, production rarely exceeds 80,000 bottles, including about 10,000 bottles of Riserva (only in exceptional harvests). The harvest, completely manual, usually begins in mid-September: a very careful selection of the harvested grapes is made, allocating for the production of the future Brunello only the first choice coming from vineyards that are at least 10 years old for the "Annata" type and over 25 years of age for the "Riserva".
