Tenerife; one of the 7 Canary Islands, home to five of the islands ten DO's, it is also the largest wine producer of all the islands. Spanish by nationality, Portugese by influence and situated of the coast of the African continent, the Canary Islands as a whole and Tenerife in particular provide a distinct environment for the production of wine. Houses and settlements dot the coast, and a 12,200 foot volcano dominates the centre of the island. It may only take an hour to drive from one end of it to the other, but in that time you will encounter jungles, deserts, tropical beaches, and mountains.
The islands isolation helped it to avoid the Phylloxera, the devastating root louse that almost destroyed the European wine industry in the mid to late 1800's. As a result Tenerife is one of the few places in the world to possess ancient own rooted vines.
It is amongst this background that Suertes del Marques is making some of the most distinctive and engaging wines in the world. A family winery, it has been in the hands of winemaker Jonathan Garcia since 2006. Working organically, with minimal intervention Jonathan has been organising vineyards and painstakingly crafting terroir driven wines from a treasure trove of lost and little known grapes like Listan Negro and Blanco, Malvasia Rosado, Vijariego, Baboso Negro and more. The resulting wines show an impressive level of precision and tension for anywhere, let alone the Canary Islands. Grape varietals that are perfectly suited to soil type and elevation (300-700 meters) are crafted into wines through minimal intervention practices, thus preserving their unique terroir stamp of textures and aromatics in a delicious transparent format.
The wines are pure and without artifice showing showing bright, fresh textures and a strong underlying volcanic mineral texture. They are extremely versatile and very food friendly, but most of all they are a time-machine back to an era where finesse and mineral backbone were the hallmark of most great wines.
Tickets non refundable.
